Whole Wall R-value

There’s more to most walls than meets the eye, and the R-value of a Whole Wall will be considerably lower than the R-value of the insulation. Whole Wall R-value calculation procedures factor in all of the effects of field framing members and the additional structural members required at windows, doors, and exterior wall corners. As you can see from the bar graph below, SIPs improves the energy efficiency of a wall by reducing energy robing field framing and other structural members like headers, ganged king posts and corner stacks, etc., used commonly in conventional construction methods. SIPs with EPS insulation reduce framing members, which improves insulation wall coverage. The numbers below confirm the energy efficiency of SIPs over conventional framing methods. The study of Whole Wall R-value performance conclusively demonstrate that SIPs improves the energy efficiency of wall construction.

ORNL Testing and SIPs

Higher R-value means R-Control SIPs reduce energy consumption. The energy efficiency of SIPs does not stop with just higher R-value. SIPs improves the energy efficiency of walls by reducing air movement through the walls as well. R-Control SIPs are made with rigid EPS insulation cores and solid exterior/interior skins of engineered OSB creating an air impermeable structural laminate. SIPs with EPS insulation and OSB skins, then joined together with sealed spline detailing, make for the best air barrier possible in construction. High R-value plus air tightness are the reasons why R-Control SIPs reduce energy consumption in homes and light commercial buildings.
